Saturday 14th March 2026. For one French photographer in Gdańsk, this was shaping up to be a serious Saturday night. Pidżama Porno at B90, then home for Le Crunch, France versus England, Six Nations title on the line. The concert first though. Priorities.
B90 was packed. Not “doing alright for a Saturday” packed, properly rammed, the kind of full house that tells you before the first chord that something real is about to happen. And it did, around 20:15, when Pidżama Porno walked on stage and the room just detonated.
For the uninitiated, a quick lesson in Polish cultural history. Pidżama Porno were born in Poznań in December 1987, the creation of vocalist Krzysztof “Grabaż” Grabowski and guitarist Andrzej “Kozak” Kozakiewicz. They cut their teeth at the legendary Jarocin Festival, toured Czechoslovakia as the first Polish underground band to do so and spent the late 80s and 90s building a body of work, punk, reggae, ska, intelligent street-level rock, that lodged itself permanently in the DNA of Polish music. Albums like “Złodzieje Zapalniczek“, “Styropian“, and “Marchef W Butonierce” became genuine touchstones. The band dissolved in 2007 after a farewell tour, but returned as a leaner trio, Grabaż, Kozak, and Kuzyn, releasing “Sprzedawca Jutra” in 2019 and proving the hunger was still absolutely real. Nearly four decades on from that first Poznań rehearsal, they are still out here doing it.
Back to B90. The front rows were full of young faces, and they knew every word. Not in a passive, half-remembered way, but the full-throated, singing-back-into-the-mic kind of knowing. That is the truest test of a band’s legacy, the next generation has taken ownership of your songs and made them their own. Pidżama Porno passed that test before the second song was done.
The band sounded tight and raw in equal measure, which is exactly the combination you want from a group carrying this much history. Tight means experience, muscle memory, years of playing together baked into every transition. Raw means they haven’t polished the life out of it, haven’t sanded down the edges to make it more comfortable. The bass player was a force of nature, one of those musicians who pulls your eyes away from the singer, all movement and energy, dragging the whole set forward with him.
Behind the band, a large screen threw visuals across the stage. Not a flashy distraction, but a considered backdrop that gave the show a sense of scale and intention. A band that respects the live experience enough to think about what it looks like as well as what it sounds like.
Song after song, the energy in the room built rather than levelled off, which is rarer than it should be. This is music with no pretension, no posturing, no desire to be anything other than what it is. Simple but not simplistic, rock that earns its place in the room through honesty rather than spectacle. Even without understanding a word of Polish, you could feel the weight these songs carry, the history embedded in them, the reason a packed room of Poles, young and old, reacts to them the way they do.
Pidżama Porno did exactly what they came to do. And somewhere across Gdańsk, a French photographer headed home to watch Le Crunch. Some Saturday nights just stack up right.
