Eighteen Editions Of Noise: The D.I.Y. Hardcore Punk Fest in Gdynia

The D.I.Y. Hardcore Punk Fest in Gdynia is firmly an institution. Eighteen editions deep, still running on collective energy and a stubbornly anti-commercial ethos, it remains one of the most consistent and honest hardcore punk gatherings in Central Europe.

The fest is the work of DIY3M, short for DIY Trójmiasto, a booking collective operating out of the Trójmiasto area. They started organising together in 2001, and the fest itself grew out of that same impulse: bring the bands you care about to your city, do it yourself, keep it real. Over the years Podwórko.art, formerly known as Ucho, on ulica św. Piotra in Gdynia became the home turf for the main event, a space that fits the music perfectly, raw enough to feel right.

The track record speaks for itself. Previous editions have hosted bands like Mob 47 and Skitsystem from Sweden, The Restarts from the UK, Morne from the USA, Agrimonia and Desperat from Sweden, and Downfall Of Gaia from Germany. That is not a random collection of names. That is a carefully curated lineage of bands that matter in the global underground, booked by people who actually listen to this music rather than just manage it. By the eleventh edition, the two-day format was already locked in, complete with distros and vegan food, the full package for anyone who knows what DIY punk culture actually looks like in practice.

Eighteen editions is a remarkable run for anything operating outside the mainstream.

Vol. 18: The Line-Up

Warm-Up Day – Friday 24 April, Klub Desdemona, Abrahama 37, Gdynia, 19:00, 50 PLN

Hibernation – Athens, Greece

One of the genuine founding names of Greek crust, active since the 1990s with a history that places them in the same lineage as Panikos and the Amebix-inflected heavy crust that defined Greece’s contribution to the international underground. Their 2018 album “In The Years Of Desolation”, recorded at Ignite Studio and re-amped and mastered at Entasis Studio, is their most recent full-length, and features the line-up of Alex on guitar and vocals, Gianna on drums and backing vocals, Haris on bass and backing vocals, and Christos on guitar. Coming back after a 14-year gap between full-lengths, “In The Years Of Desolation” showed a band with nothing to prove and everything still to say.

Their roots sprawl across Latin America, a band drawn from the diaspora and part of the Otro Futuro collective. Speed metal soloing, ferocious vocals, complex structures that never drag, and lyrics entirely in Spanish dealing with state violence, systemic rot, and resistance. Detonating riffs, attacking drums, and a band that has spent over a decade getting sharper without losing any of the urgency that launched them.
