Moodring are back gnashing their teeth with “Cannibal“, a new single that comes swinging out of the late 90s/early 00s hard rock playbook and straight into the trailer for the new season of Crunchyroll series Clevatess. Founded in Florida and now based in Atlanta, the nu metal x alt-rock outfit, led by dynamic frontman Hunter Young, are clearly not in the mood for half-measures.
“Cannibal“ arrives with a fresh visualizer and a very deliberate mission. Young says it was one of the last songs added to the record and that it’s laser-focused on combining nu metal, alt rock, and industrial dance music. You can hear that intent in the chunky riffs and kinetic synths, all wrapped around the kind of dark subject matter Moodring have already staked their name on.
Lyrically and conceptually, “Cannibal” digs into the life and mating cycles of black widow spiders, using them as a grim mirror for our own intimate relationships, how they can turn cannibalistic, nihilistic, and ultimately collapse into demise. It’s classic turn-of-the-millennium heaviness in feel, but sharpened with a modern, self-aware edge.
If you’ve been tracking Moodring since their 2022 debut “Stargazer“, the one that bagged a 4/5 review from Kerrang! and helped them catch the eye of tastemakers, “Cannibal” feels like a logical next mutation. The band have recently signed to SharpTone Records, and this single sounds like a statement of intent for that new chapter: heavier, sleeker, and primed for crossover moments like the “Clevatess” trailer placement.
