A Kaleidoscope of Performances
The festival offered us an extraordinary selection of bands from all around the world who brought their unique musical universes to life. Each band offered a poetic fusion of tradition and innovation, inviting us on a musical experience across cultures and souls.
Gabba, meaning “Ivory-coated Reindeer” in Sámi, evoked the Arctic’s ethereal landscapes by combining ancient joik chants with Norwegian folk and Americana. From Tanzania, The Zawose Queens brought the vibrant rhythms of the Gogo tribe, blending traditional instruments with modern experimentation, while Hungary’s Söndörgő transformed South Slavic folk traditions into a living, ever-changing river of sound with their virtuoso tambura playing.
Finishing the first day, Senegal’s iconic Orchestra Baobab merged traditional rhythms with modern melodies, crafting a timeless symphony of West African soul that has enchanted audiences for over fifty years.
On the second day, Poland’s WoWaKin infused the festival with the raw energy and delicate lyricism of Polish folk music, captivating dance enthusiasts with their vibrant, improvisational performances. Meanwhile, Pixvae blurred genres with a fusion of Afro-Colombian currulao and Lyon’s underground grit, creating a powerful and festive musical experience.
From Cyprus, Buzz’ Ayaz wove a rich universe of Eastern Mediterranean psychedelia, rock, and blues, reflecting the cultural complexity of their city. Jupiter & Okwess from Congo, led by the charismatic Jupiter Bokondji, delivered a potent mix of traditional rhythms and rock, they ended the festival on the big stage with a bang. Such an energy was just hynoptizing.
On Sunday, under a lovely tent, Hizbut Jámm combined Raphael Rogiński’s virtuoso guitar with West African and krautrock influences, crafting trance-like, transcendent music. Justin Adams and Mauro Durante, who first met at Notte della Taranta in 2011, also captivated the audience. Their 2021 album “Still Moving” blends pizzica rhythms with rock and desert blues riffs, creating a unique sound that turned their performances into engaging musical rituals. Their presence was a testament to the Globaltica Festival’s celebration of creativity and the unifying power of music.
