Ekko Astral – “Pomegranate Tree”

Ekko Astral’s new song, “Pomegranate Tree“, is a powerful blend of emotional intensity and political commentary. Released irecently, it follows their earlier track, “Holocaust Remembrance Day“. The song is steeped in heavy desert rock, featuring ominous drum and bass elements that build into a chaotic and discordant soundscape. Lyrically, it addresses themes of destruction, displacement, and helplessness, particularly referencing the ongoing violence in Palestine.

Jael Holzman, the band’s frontwoman, and drummer Miri Tyler, both Jewish, have spoken out about their complex feelings of watching a land they were taught to view as their “homeland” become a site of violence and suffering. Holzman’s lyrics in the song reflect insomnia and distress, using imagery like “melatonin’s not enough” and “my melatonin is a burning refugee under a pomegranate tree” to express the personal toll of witnessing such atrocities. The track also criticizes political inaction, particularly from Washington, D.C.

“Pomegranate Tree” continues Ekko Astral’s tradition of combining raw, noisy punk rock with deeply personal and politically charged lyrics.
