On the cool evening of June 23, 2025, the Opera Leśna in Sopot, Poland, played host to a night that many in attendance will remember for years to come. It marked not just a return of the iconic progressive metal band Dream Theater to the Tri-City area after more than a decade, but also a celebration of the band’s remarkable 40-year journey through music. This was a great experience that fused musical virtuosity, emotional depth, and the raw beauty of a beautiful natural venue.
A Fitting Stage for Legends
The Opera Leśna, an open-air amphitheater nestled within a dense pine forest, provided an almost mythical backdrop for the evening. With over 4,500 fans filling its seats, the setting was magical. Though the weather forecast had threatened thunderstorms, only a light, symbolic drizzle graced the audience, it was like the elements themselves were paying tribute to the legends on stage. The forest around the venue acted as a natural amplifier.
This venue, surrounded by nature, was perhaps the only place befitting a band like Dream Theater, whose music is often described as otherworldly. Here, in this mythical setting, where Heilung played last year, the band delivered a performance that was stripped of gimmicks and focused entirely on their greatest strength: the music.
Dream Theater: Forty Years of Excellence
The concert also marked the band’s 40th anniversary, a milestone few groups ever reach, and fewer still with such integrity and artistic consistency. Making the night even more special was the classic Dream Theater lineup: James LaBrie on vocals, John Petrucci on guitar, John Myung on bass, Jordan Rudess on keyboards, and the much-anticipated return of drummer Mike Portnoy. His return after more than a decade added something special to the evening.
It had been 11 years since Dream Theater last performed in the Tri-City area, with their previous show taking place in Gdynia in 2014. This long absence only heightened the anticipation, and the band did not disappoint.

It featured new tracks from their latest album “Parasomnia“, including the hauntingly powerful “Night Terror” and the intricate “Midnight Messiah“. These were interwoven seamlessly with fan favorites like “The Dark Eternal Night“, “Hollow Years“, and a particularly moving rendition of “Peruvian Skies” that included subtle nods to Pink Floyd‘s “Wish You Were Here” and Metallica, showcasing their wide-ranging influences.
Musically, the band was in top form. Every note, every transition, and every solo were delivered with technical precision. Like a very well-oiled machinerie.
Petrucci‘s guitar work was as blistering as it was melodic, while Rudess‘ keyboard solos brought a futuristic sheen to the gig. Myung‘s bass was both thunderous and nuanced, anchoring the complex arrangements with ease. LaBrie‘s vocals soared effortlessly through the venue, proving his enduring prowess. And Portnoy, whose drumming remains a benchmark in the genre, delivered a masterclass in rhythm, energy, and passion.
Last evening, we had all the gods with us. A legendary band at the top of their game, a crowd that couldn’t have been more devoted, a venue that felt carved out of a dream, and a moody sky that added just the right amount of drama. Sometimes, everything lines up perfectly – and for a couple of unforgettable hours in Sopot, it truly did.
